CBD is present in a wide variety of products: CBD oils, CBD creams, CBD flowers, CBD hashish and more. Each type of product has different forms of use, characteristics and a different regulatory framework in Europe.
In this guide we explain the different forms of CBD use, the types of products available and the regulations that affect them. The information contained in this article is for information purposes only and does not constitute a recommendation for consumption.
In several European countries, the regulation of CBD varies according to the form of use and the type of product. Topical use (on the skin) is legal throughout the European Union. Other forms of use, such as oral or sublingual, are only authorized in certain countries. This essential guide will help you understand the differences between each format for buying CBD.
What is CBD?
The cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the chemical compounds present in the cannabis plant. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the major compound in marijuana, CBD is not psychoactive: it does not produce a “high” sensation or alter mental perception.
In recent years, interest in CBD has grown thanks to scientific research on its potential properties. It has been studied in relation to general well-being, among other areas. However, it is important to note that the use of CBD for therapeutic purposes should only be done under professional advice.
CBD Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum and Isolated: which one to choose?
Not all CBD extracts are the same. The type of CBD largely determines the quality, composition and effects of the product:
- CBD Full Spectrum: includes all the natural compounds of hemp – aromatic terpenes, secondary cannabinoids and a minimal THC content (less than 0.2%). The components act in synergy, a scientifically studied phenomenon called the entourage effect. It is the type of CBD most valued by professionals.
- CBD Broad Spectrum: similar to Full Spectrum, but without THC. An alternative for those who prefer to avoid THC completely.
- Isolated CBD (Isolate): contains only pure CBD, without other hemp compounds. It is the least complete of the three.
In Cannactiva we work exclusively with Full Spectrum CBD, because we consider that it is the one that provides all the compounds of the plant and provides the most balanced effects of CBD.
Ways to use CBD: what are the options?
There are several ways to use CBD products, from the application on the skin to the oral or sublingual route in the countries where it is authorized. Each format has its own characteristics and legal regulation that varies from country to country.
In most of the European Union, CBD products are marketed for external (topical) use or for decorative and aromatic purposes, depending on the type of product. The forms of use described below are for information purposes only.
CBD oils: the most versatile format
CBD oils are the most popular and widespread CBD product on the market. Depending on the country and its regulation, they support different routes of application:
- Topical use (on the skin): it is applied directly on the desired area. It is the most widespread form of use in the European Union for CBD oils.
- Sublingual use: in countries where it is authorized (such as Canada, Switzerland or USA), a few drops are placed under the tongue for 30-60 seconds. This route offers rapid absorption, with effects in 30-45 minutes that can last up to 3-4 hours.
- Oral use (ingestion): also available in some countries outside the EU. It is added to beverages or food. Effects take longer to appear due to the digestive process.

Cannactiva CBD oils are marketed exclusively for external (topical) use. They are not intended for oral or sublingual use. Cannactiva does not promote or recommend the internal use of its CBD oils. If you want to learn more about the differences between oils, check out our guide to buying CBD oil.
CBD creams and cosmetics: topical use
The creams and cosmetics with CBD are applied directly on the skin. It is the most widespread and fully legal form of use throughout the European Union.
- Ideal for skin care and skin wellness.
- They are used in physiotherapy treatments and sports massages.
- CBD applied topically can contribute to the well-being of the skin thanks to its cosmetic properties.
Topical use is the main form of application of Cannactiva’s CBD products. All Cannactiva’s CBD cosmetics comply with the cosmetic regulations in force in the European Union.

CBD flowers and buds
CBD flowers come from industrial hemp varieties with a THC content of less than 0.2%. They have gained popularity for their rich aromatic profile and variety of terpenes.
In some countries such as the United States, Canada, Switzerland or Luxembourg, hemp flowers are marketed for smoking or vaporizing with specific devices for dried herbs.
In most of the EU, CBD flowers are marketed for decorative, aromatic and collectible purposes. Cannactiva CBD flowers are not intended to be smoked, vaped or ingested. Any other use constitutes an unintended use by the purchaser.
CBD hashish (hash, pollen, iceolator)
The CBD hashish includes products such as hash, Pollen Dry Sift, Bubble Hash, Iceolator and Moonrocks. These are concentrates obtained from hemp trichomes and stand out for their intense aroma and high concentration of cannabidiol.
Like CBD flowers, CBD hashish is marketed in the EU for decorative, aromatic and collectible purposes. Cannactiva CBD hashish is not intended for combustion, inhalation or ingestion.
CBD edibles (gummies, capsules)
CBD edibles, such as gummies or capsules, are food products enriched with cannabidiol. In countries such as Canada or the United States, where they are authorized, the effects take about 60 minutes to appear and can last from 4 to 6 hours, as the CBD must pass through the digestive system.
In the European Union, CBD products for oral use (ingestion) are not authorized in most member countries. The European Novel Foods Regulation has not completed the evaluation of CBD as a novel food. Cannactiva does not market CBD products intended for ingestion.
Regulation of CBD in Europe according to form of use
The regulation of CBD in Europe varies according to the type of product and the way it is used. It is important to know the current regulations in your country of residence before purchasing and using any CBD product. Here is a general overview:
- Topical use (creams, skin oils, cosmetics): legal throughout the European Union. CBD products for skin application are regulated as cosmetic products.
- CBD flowers and CBD hashish: they are marketed in most EU countries for decorative, aromatic and collecting purposes. Permitted use varies from country to country.
- Oral or sublingual use (oils, gummies, capsules): not authorized as a food product in most EU countries (Novel Foods regulation). Countries such as Canada, Switzerland or the United States do consider this route of use.
The marketing and permitted use of CBD products depends on the country and the legal category of the product. For more information on current regulations, please see our article on the regulation of CBD and hemp.
It is recommended to always be informed about the legislation of the country of residence and to read the product label to ensure proper and legal use. Cannactiva products are not intended for oral, sublingual or ingestion. All Cannactiva products comply with current regulations.
Advantages and disadvantages of each form of CBD use
Each CBD format has its own characteristics. Here is a summary of the main differences. The availability of each format depends on the regulation of each country.

Precautions and contraindications of CBD
CBD is a compound considered very safe. However, there are certain situations where caution is advised:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: it is recommended to avoid the use of CBD products during these stages, unless expressly indicated by a doctor.
- Minors: CBD products are not intended for persons under 18 years of age.
- Ongoing medication: CBD may interact with some medications. If you are undergoing treatment, consult your doctor before using any CBD product.
