Deep in Northern California lies a mythical region for any cannabis lover: the Emerald Triangle. Known for producing some of the most potent, aromatic and pure flowers in the world, this area has been for decades the heart of artisanal cultivation. At Cannactiva we are inspired by this tradition to bring you our collection of Emerald Triangle indoor flowers, grown with the same passion, respect and attention to detail that characterizes this legendary region. Discover the Emerald Collection by Cannactiva What is the Emerald Triangle? Emerald Triangle is a region in northern California composed of three counties: Humboldt, Mendocino and Trinity. It is known worldwide for being the most important cannabis producing area in the United States, and one of the most influential in the world. For more than 50 years, cannabis has been grown in this privileged natural environment, surrounded by forests, mountains and microclimates ideal for outdoor cultivation. The quality of the flowers produced here has given rise to a true cult following for Californian artisanal cannabis. Cannactiva’s CBD Flowers are inspired by this incredible region, because our story starts right there. That’s why the names of our CBD Indoor cannabis strains are named after emblematic cities and areas of the Emerald Triangle: Yuba (Blue Dream), Eureka (Tropicana Cookies), Trinity (Gelato #33) and Willits (Limoncello). Brief history of the Emerald Triangle The history of this region is directly linked to the hippie movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Many young people left the cities to seek a self-sufficient life in nature. In this context, cannabis cultivation became a way of subsistence, but also a symbol of freedom. For decades, the Emerald Triangle was a clandestine growing area. Geographic isolation allowed it to operate with some discretion, but it also meant risks: raids, legal problems and harsh living conditions. Even so, a resilient community formed, with a deep respect for the cannabis plant and for the land. Emerald Triangle is a region of California famous for its legal crops. Geography and climate: the secret of the best cannabis The combination of Mediterranean climate, dry summers, wet winters and nutrient-rich soils make California’s Emerald Triangle a unique place to grow cannabis. Plants can develop to their full potential, producing large, resinous buds with complex, sophisticated and unmistakable aromatic profiles. In addition, the geographical diversity of the region – from mountainous areas at over 1,000 meters to areas near the sea – brings unique nuances to the marijuana plants, generating a genetic and aromatic richness that is difficult to match. Representative cities include Eureka and Garberville, considered the unofficial cannabis capital of Humboldt; Willits and Ukiah in Mendocino; and Wildwood and Weaverville in the rural heart of Trinity County. These locations have historically been key points for growers, distributors and industry workers. Although the Emerald Triangle remains the historical and cultural heart of cannabis in the USA, cultivation has spread to many other regions of California, especially after legalization. Cannabis plantations can be found in the Sonoma, Santa Barbara and Monterey regions, as well as in regions such as Yuba and Napa Valley, among others. The legalization of marijuana in California was approved in November 2016 through Proposition 64(Adult Use of Marijuana Act) and went into effect on January 1, 2018, when the legal sale of cannabis for adult use was officially allowed in the state. Breeding and legendary genetics of Emerald Triangle One of the great legacies of the Emerald Triangle is the development of unique cannabis genetics. Since the 1970s, many growers started breeding: they crossed selected plants to improve flavor, potency, resistance and adaptability to the environment. This selection work gave birth to some of the most iconic strains in the world, such as OG Kush, Skunk, Trainwreck, Mendo Purps or Blue Dream. These genetics were born or perfected in this region and have been the basis for thousands of hybrids worldwide. Today, breeding in the Emerald Triangle is still a living practice. Some seed banks and small growers still keep pure genetic lines, cultivated for generations, which represent a real botanical heritage of the cannabis culture. What began in the 1970s as a countercultural activity has over time established itself as a genuine local industry. For decades, thousands of families have made a living from growing, processing and marketing cannabis, generating employment, boosting local businesses and shaping a self-sufficient economy. Agricultural fairs, cooperatives, growers’ associations and craft markets revolve around cannabis as a star product. In towns like Garberville, Laytonville or Willits, the economy has historically depended on the growing seasons. The area has developed a strong sense of ownership and pride in its local product, protected even with appellation of origin initiatives. Trimmigrant: the harvest economy Between the 1990s and 2016, working in cannabis in California was a quick and straightforward way to make good money in just a few months. Every fall, thousands of people from all over the world, known as trimmigrants, would arrive in the region to participate in the harvest, manicuring freshly cut marijuana buds. How much does marijuana make in California? Before legalization, trimmer work in California could generate between $200 and $500 a day, often paid in cash and without a contract. Today, they say that in 2024 it will pay, at most, $100 a day. This informal economy sustained entire communities for months, activating local commerce, rural housing rentals and basic services. The legalization of marijuana in 2016 and its implementation from 2018 brought strict regulation, enforcement and licensing, drastically reducing these unregulated jobs that popularized the region. Legalization: Benefit or threat? With the legalization of medical (1996) and recreational (2016) cannabis in California, the Emerald Triangle entered a new phase. While it opened the door to a regulated market, it also brought with it high costs, restrictive licensing and competition with large companies. Many small growers have not been able to legalize, which has led to an economic downturn in some villages. In addition, cannabis prices have plummeted, which has affected the profitability of traditional crops and small producers who bet on the artisanal model. According to the California Department of Food and Agriculture, as of February 2018 only 1,483 licenses had been granted, out of approximately 50,000 estimated growers in the state. The California Growers Association warned that only between 1% and 3% of those who wanted to regularize their activity had succeeded, due to the high costs and complexity of the process. Meanwhile, large companies have taken advantage of the system to grab ground: some have purchased multiple licenses to consolidate large-scale cultivation operations. A report published by New Cannabis Ventures in January confirmed that just fifteen companies now controlled 10% of all licenses in the state. This imbalance has displaced many traditional growers in the Emerald Triangle, undermining a local economy based on artisanal and sustainable cultivation. Environmental impact: lights and shadows The boom of illegal cultivation in past decades had a strong environmental impact: deforestation, use of pesticides, diversion of rivers, and soil contamination. Today, legal growers are making an effort to practice sustainable cultivation, with ecological certifications, responsible use of water and soil recovery. The nature of the Emerald Triangle is an asset that the cannabis community in the area wants to protect. Many current projects combine regenerative agriculture, renewable energy and environmental education. The future of the Emerald Triangle The Emerald Triangle is now at a crossroads. Some predict the disappearance of artisanal growers in the face of the cannabis giants, and others see the opportunity to bet on added value, artisanal quality and green tourism. The new model is not about competing on volume, but on excellence. Like wine from certain regions of France or coffee from Colombia, cannabis from the Emerald Triangle has a history, an identity and a know-how that cannot be easily copied.
