Here we explain how to germinate with Jiffy step by step and give useful tips to ensure the success of your crop from day one.

What is a Jiffy?

A Jiffy is a small disc of pressed peat that, when hydrated, expands and becomes an excellent growing medium for germinating seeds. The Jiffy is very easy to use: just soak it in water for a few minutes until it increases in size and becomes spongy. Then simply put the seed inside.

Among its benefits, the Jiffy keeps the humidity very well, which helps the seed to germinate in good conditions and facilitates the development of the roots from the first moment. In addition, it allows the plant to be transplanted directly with the Jiffy to the final pot, without touching the roots or stressing it.

How to Germinate Seeds with Jiffy

1. Seed hydration

Place the seed in a glass of water at room temperature and add a few drops of hydrogen peroxide (3% hydrogen peroxide) to oxygenate it and prevent the appearance of fungus. Let it soak in a dark, warm place for up to 48 hours, or until the main root (radicle) is 2-3 mm long. If possible, use osmosis or rain water to avoid chlorine or salts.

2. Preparation of the Jiffy

Hydrate the Jiffy by soaking it in warm water for a few minutes until it expands completely. Place it on a clean tray, plate or container.

3. Sowing

If the Jiffy has plugged the top hole where the seed should go when hydrating, use the tip of a pencil to open it slightly to create adequate space. Place the germinated seed with the radicle pointing down, and make sure it is about 2 mm deep. Then cover it lightly with the substrate from the Jiffy itself to protect the root from exposure to direct light.

4. Growth

Keep the Jiffy with good humidity, in a warm environment (between 20°C and 25°C) and indirect light, until the seedling develops at least the cotyledons (first leaves) and at least the first pair of true leaves. During this time, make sure the Jiffys are kept moist but not saturated with water, as excess moisture could rot the seed. If you see that the jiffy is a bit dry, you can spray with water or water by adding water from the base.

5. Transplanting to final pot

When the seedling is sufficiently developed, it is recommended to remove the netting around the Jiffy to prevent the roots from encountering resistance as they grow.

Transplant the seedling directly into the final pot of at least 15-18 liters capacity. Place the Jiffy with the seedling directly into the substrate, without removing the roots. After transplanting, water sparingly and place the pot in a well-lit environment.
