What is Iceolator and how is it produced?

Iceolator or Ice-O-Lator is a cannabis extract that uses a cold extraction technique using ice water and mesh fraction size between 73 and 119 microns, which separates the trichomes while preserving the cannabinoids and terpenes intact. Trichomes are the tiny resin glands that cover the cannabis buds, where cannabinoids such as THC and CBD are found, as well as terpenes that give the product its aroma.

When we touch with our fingers, the trichomes break and release their resin, which is what gives the sticky feel to cannabis. This resin contains high concentrations of cannabinoids, terpenes and other chemical compounds that are responsible for the aroma and effects of cannabis.

By cooling the plant in ice water, the trichomes harden and detach from the plant matter, retaining all their CBD-rich resin. The exclusive use of ice water effectively separates the presence of chlorophyll and waxes, making this Iceolator a clean and natural concentrate, without the use of solvents and with exceptional purity.

Characteristics of Cannactiva’s Iceolator resin

With a very high CBD content of 60%, this resin is ideal for those looking for the quality of a good cannabis concentrate, without the presence of the psychoactive compound THC, which in this product remains below 0.2% THC according to European regulations.

Iceolator is cold stored to preserve its fresh and resinous aroma, with gassy notes that are due to the preservation of terpenes in the cold extraction process. The varieties used for the extract are essential to achieve an optimal result.

As for the texture, it is soft and earthy and, when handled with the fingers, it acquires a gummy and resinous consistency, due to the trichomes breaking up and releasing all its CBD-rich resin… A real cannabis delight!

What does ice-o-lator mean?

The name Iceolator is a combination of the English words “ice” and “isolate”, reflecting the essence of the method: the extraction or isolation of trichomes from cannabis flowers using ice to obtain a pure and potent concentrate. This process takes advantage of low temperatures to facilitate the separation of trichomes, resulting in a high quality final product. Mila Jansen, known as the Queen of Hashish, invented the Iceolator machine in 1998, offering a cleaner and more efficient alternative to traditional methods. This invention was preceded by the Pollinator, launched in 1993. Both machines were inspired by the operation of a washing machine to centrifuge the buds in a controlled way and obtain extracts of the highest quality.

Iceolator extraction process

The Iceolator technique includes the following key steps:

1- Selection and preparation of raw materials

Hemp strains with high trichome density and CBD-rich profiles are chosen. Cannactiva uses the best CBD flowers, ensuring a high quality final product. The flowers must be well dried to facilitate efficient trichome separation.

2- Freezing and agitation

The dried flowers are placed in ice water, maintaining a temperature between 0°C and 4°C. The low temperature hardens the trichomes, which facilitates their detachment by mechanical agitation, without the use of other chemical solvents. A specific agitation machine is used to mix the water and the cannabis. This mechanical movement detaches the trichomes from the flowers, facilitating their harvesting.

3- Mesh filtration

The agitated mixture passes through multiple mesh filters of different particle sizes. Each mesh captures trichomes of specific sizes, allowing for collection and purification of the extract. Between 5 and 7 meshes of different sizes are used to ensure maximum purity of the extract, from 73 to 119 microns.

4- Drying and storage

Once the resin is harvested, it is carefully dried to avoid the appearance of mold and to preserve the volatile compounds such as terpenes, which are essential for the resin to retain all the potency and aroma of the original cannabis flowers. The extraction yield varies according to the variety and quality of the raw material, but generally ranges between 10% and 20% of the original dry weight.

Iceolator Conservation and Usage Tips

To ensure the quality and durability of this resin, Cannactiva recommends storing Iceolator in a cool, dry place away from light. Exposure to temperature changes could alter the quality of the product, affecting its texture and aroma.
