Here we explain how to germinate with Jiffy step by step and give useful tips to ensure the success of your crop from day one.

What is a Jiffy?

A Jiffy is a small disc of pressed peat that, when hydrated, expands and becomes an excellent growing medium for germinating seeds. The Jiffy is very easy to use: just soak it in water for a few minutes until it increases in size and becomes spongy. Then simply put the seed inside.

Among its benefits, the Jiffy keeps the humidity very well, which helps the seed to germinate in good conditions and facilitates the development of the roots from the first moment. In addition, it allows the plant to be transplanted directly with the Jiffy to the final pot, without touching the roots or stressing it.

How to Germinate Seeds with Jiffy

1. Hidratación de la semilla

Coloca la semilla en un vaso con agua a temperatura ambiente y añade unas gotas de agua oxigenada (peróxido de hidrógeno al 3%) para oxigenarla y prevenir la aparición de hongos. Déjala en remojo en un lugar oscuro y cálido durante un máximo de 48 horas, o hasta que la raíz principal (radícula) mida unos 2-3 mm. Si es posible, utiliza agua osmotizada o de lluvia para evitar cloro o sales.

2. Preparación del Jiffy

Hidrata el Jiffy sumergiéndolo en agua templada durante unos minutos hasta que se expanda por completo. Colócalo sobre una bandeja limpia, plato o recipiente.

3. Siembra

Si el Jiffy ha tapado el agujero superior donde debe ir la semilla al hidratarse, usa la punta de un lápiz para abrirlo ligeramente y crear un espacio adecuado. Coloca la semilla germinada con la radícula apuntando hacia abajo, y asegúrate de que quede aproximadamente a 2 mm de profundidad. Luego, cúbrela ligeramente con el sustrato del mismo Jiffy para proteger la raíz de la exposición a la luz directa.

4. Crecimiento

Mantén el Jiffy con buena humedad, en un ambiente cálido (entre 20ºC y 25ºC) y luz indirecta, hasta que la plántula desarrolle al menos los cotiledones (primeras hojas) y al menos el primer par de hojas verdaderas. Durante este tiempo, asegúrate de que los Jiffys se mantengan húmedos pero no saturados de agua, ya que un exceso de humedad podría pudrir la semilla. Si ves que el jiffy está un poco seco, puedes pulverizar con agua o regar añadiendo agua desde la base.

5. Trasplante a maceta final

Cuando la plántula tenga suficiente desarrollo, se recomienda retirar la red que envuelve el Jiffy para evitar que las raíces encuentren resistencia al crecer.

Trasplanta la plántula directamente en la maceta definitiva de al menos 15-18 litros de capacidad. Coloca el Jiffy con la plántula directamente en el sustrato, sin remover las raíces. Una vez realizado el trasplante, riega con moderación y coloca la maceta en un ambiente con buena iluminación.
