Hashish: The most complete guide to hashish

We tell you all about hashing: What is it? Types, composition, legality, elaboration methods and much more with Cannactiva‘s hashish guide.

What is hashish?

Hashish, or hash, is a product derived from cannabis, obtained by extracting the resin-filled trichomes of marijuana, pressing and shaping them, commonly in tablet form.

In terms of potency, hashish is superior to marijuana, as it contains a significantly higher percentage of cannabinoid compounds (double or more).

Hashish is a very popular drug in certain areas of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal or Morocco. In Spain, until not so long ago, hash was consumed more than marijuana itself, coming mainly from Morocco.

Colloquially, hashish is called by various names: costo, chocolate, grifa, hash, polen, hueva, bellota, apaleao (or apaleado), jachís or hueva, among many others.

Hashish composition

Hashish is mainly composed of the resin or trichomes of the marijuana flower. Therefore, when we analyze it, in its composition we find high concentrations of cannabinoids such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD) and other minor ones, such as cannabigerol (CBG), cannabichromene (CBC)…; as well as terpenes, such as alpha and beta pinene, beta caryophyllene, limonene, myrcene or linalool (among hundreds of others).

Types of hashish

Broadly speaking, we find that, depending on its origin and the type of pressing, we can find several types of hashish, these are just some of the best known:

What is the difference between hashish and marijuana?

Hashish and marijuana come from the same plant, Cannabis sativa, from which both marijuana and hemp are obtained. When we refer to marijuana, we are talking about the whole cannabis plant or, more specifically, its flowers (the buds), which have been consumed for millennia for their relaxing and psychoactive effects. Hashish is obtained from the extraction and pressing of marijuana flowers, from the resin that covers them.

Hashish has a higher THC concentration than marijuana because it is a type of cannabis extraction and concentrates the cannabinoids.

In terms of effects, as a drug, the main difference between marijuana buds and hash is that hashish is much stronger than marijuana, since it concentrates all the resin of the plant.

THC content of hashish and marijuana

The THC content is much higher in hashish compared to marijuana buds. Just as marijuana usually contains between 15 and 35% THC, hashish can contain between 40 and up to 60% purity or even more, depending on the type of extract. In the case of CBD hashish, the most abundant cannabinoid is CBD rather than THC.

Also, unlike marijuana, hashish is low in fibers and plant debris.

How to know if a hashish is good?

The main disadvantage of hashish, especially if we do not know its origin, is that it can be mixed with other substances. The black market, in order to get more out of the substances, has always taken advantage of the lack of control over the products to mix, or cut, the hashish with all kinds of elements, some very harmful, such as tar, plastics or even tires.

So the first consideration we should take when acquiring hashish is to make sure of its origin. That said, there are some elements that will be indicative of its quality:

Low quality hashish can be contaminated with a number of substances such as dirt, plastic, oils and the like that can make it dangerous for consumption. It is important to ensure that the hashish has been processed correctly to avoid any contamination (we refer to the hashish analysis that revealed that the resins sold on the street contained traces of fecal bacteria and were adulterated, specifically samples were taken from hashish sold on the streets of Madrid). The legal sale of CBD hashish makes it possible to guarantee that the resin has been produced under optimal conditions.

How is hashish made?

Where does hashish come from?

Cannabis is covered with small resin glands, also known as trichomes. These glands cover your flowers, stems and even on the leaves of marijuana, and begin to develop during the flowering stage, when the plant begins to form its buds.

In fact, the main symptom of the maturation of these buds, when the grower knows that his flowers are ready for harvest, is determined by the appearance and color of the resin. It becomes more opaque and amber as flowering progresses. This color change is due to the fact that the glands or trichomes are being loaded with cannabinoids and terpenes, and that is why this resin “gets high”, that is to say, it causes the same effects as cannabis flowers (or greater, as we will see later).

Hashish is much more potent than marijuana, due to its high THC concentration. Effects that, logically, will vary depending on the type of marijuana. type of marijuana from which this resin comes from and its percentage of cannabinoids, such as CBD or THC. So, extracting and treating this resin, we will obtain our hashish.

Hashish processing methods

There are several traditional methods to obtain hashish. It can be extracted from the live plant itself, in its substrate, before harvesting, or from the dried and cured flowers. And although the methods of extraction and manipulation can be diverse, the result will always be the same: compacting the resin into a hashish plate. If you want to know more, we tell you in How CBD hashish is made.

What are the effects of hashish?

As hash is a concentrate of marijuana, it has the same type of cannabinoids and terpenes, but in higher concentration. Therefore, its effects are basically the same, if possible magnified, since the concentration of cannabinoids in the hashish resin is higher than in the flowers. In other words, hashish is more potent than cannabis.

The effects of hash depend on the variety of marijuana or CBD cannabis from which they are obtained, as well as the presence and quantity of cannabinoids and terpenes:

  • If the original strain has high levels of THC or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the most psychoactive cannabinoid, the hashish will have more cerebral effects.
  • On the other hand, if the strain has a CBD or cannabidiol dominance, it will have more body, relaxing and anxiolytic or sedative effects.

Thus, depending on this dominance, we will find that hashish can produce quite different effects: relaxation, euphoria, increased appetite, laughter, pain relief, drowsiness…

What are the adverse effects of hashish?

As mentioned, hashish is a concentration of marijuana, so it tends to have a more potent effect. This means that in samples with very high THC levels, adverse effects are more likely to occur, such as tachycardia, dry mouth, anxiety, ‘whiteouts’, short-term memory loss, headache or lack of motor coordination, paranoia or psychotic outbreaks. These effects are mostly produced by the activation of CB1 cannabinoid receptors, due to the high THC content.

Hashish made from CBD buds and flowers, such as Cannactiva’s, made from the best CBD flowers, as it does not contain THC, lacks the adverse effects produced by THC. As we say, CBD hash enhances the most relaxing and anxiolytic effects.

Hashish information (frequently asked questions)
